Just wanted to post a trip report since everything we did was based upon tips from here. Thanks to everyone- was one of the best trips we%26#39;ve ever gone on. Charleston is an amazing city, so full of history, architecture and best of all, a gastronomic paradise! I am a person who bases her vacations around food, so I can%26#39;t believe I waited this long to visit Charleston. We%26#39;re already planning our next trip. Anyway, this was a 10 year year anniversary trip (no kids), so many sites/visits were intended for adults, but we can%26#39;t wait to come back with our three boys!
Day #1- came in the afternoon and stopped at the Visitor Center for brochures, maps, coupons, etc. Then, we checked into Best Western King Charles Inn. This was the only bad part of our trip. We picked this for location and it was a great location, but we would not recommend or stay here again. See my review in the hotel section. The walls were VERY THIN and the customer service was horrible. Next time, we%26#39;ll do a nicer hotel or if we%26#39;re with the boys, the Holiday Inn. Next, we did the Old South Carriage Tour and got Zone #2! Our guide was fabulous. It gave us a good overview of the city and history. After the ride, we went to Blossom for dinner. We shared the buttermilk fried calamari which were so light and unique with the ginger sauce. I had the Caesar salad which was a little heavy with the dressing and my husband had the house salad which had Southern Comfort in the dressing which was not strong at all. I had the crab raviolis, which they%26#39;re known for since they%26#39;re homemade and my husband had the Palmetto bass. Both fantastic. No dessert since we were stuffed!
Day #2- we stopped back at the Visitor Center to buy the 2 day Heritage Passport which is a great deal if you%26#39;re doing a lot of sight-seeing in a short amount of time. We then went for breakfast at Hominy Grill. I had the regular Lowcountry breakfast and husband had a salsa omelet. We shared homemade banana bread, which was to die for! Then, we drove to Middleton Place. We went straight for the African American Focus Tour with Doug Nesbit which was the best tour of our trip. I have a degree in American Studies with a concentration in race and ethnic relations and Doug didn%26#39;t miss a thing! I would highly recommend this to everyone. Next, we walked around a bit in the unstructured gardens (be sure to bring water as it gets very hot) and then went on the garden tour. Not much was in bloom and since Doug was so amazing, this tour wasn%26#39;t as fabulous. The self-guided tour would have been fine. Next, we went to a late lunch at Middleton. The 3 course lunch is a great deal. The okra soup and she crab were good. The turkey and brie sandwich was refreshing after a hot day. The pulled pork was a little heavy. For dessert, the pecan pie seemed overcooked. And we found 2 hairs in the torte- yuck! But, we would still recommend this place after touring the Place. We finished with the Stableyards, which had individual guides who were very knowledgeable.
Next stop was Drayton Hall. It was very hot, so we quickly managed to get on the last tour of the day. It was interesting to see a ';preserved'; plantation as opposed to a ';restored'; home. After the tour, because of the heat, we only quickly walked around and headed back to the hotel. After a swim and drink, we walked around the Market area and went to Kaminsky%26#39;s. The brownie sundae was delicious and the Butterfinger cake was yummy.
Day #3- Started the day with Carolina FoodPro%26#39;s Chef Kitchen%26#39;s Tours. If you are into restaurants and foods, GO ON THIS TOUR! The usual tour guide was on vacation, so the owner, Amanda Manning gave the tour. She was great. We visited Tristan, Magnolia%26#39;s, Carolina%26#39;s and Oak. At each restaurant, we toured the outside and behind the scenes, seeing what goes into preparing the food. We also heard the history of each restaurant, each chef and each owner. It was interesting to see and hear the different opinions of each place. For example, Tristan is much more ';NY,'; with the latest gadgets, atmosphere, furniture, etc. and Carolina%26#39;s is much more of a local place, with the clientele resisting any change, and they have many old applicances, etc. We also sampled food at each location and it was AMAZING! After the tour, we went to Joseph%26#39;s for a quick bite- fried green tomatoes (nice and tart), the perfect grilled cheese (which was PERFECT), and a filet sandwich.
Then, we did our own walking tour, from our AAA guidebook and an architecture book I had purchased. We stopped at houses on the Heritage Passport- Nathaniel Russell and Edmonston-Allston and then walked around White Point Gardens and up the Battery stopping at Waterfront Park to sit on the swings with an italian ice. We then drove up to Aiken Rhett. It was interesting to tour these different houses and the history behind them.
After visiting these restaurants in the am, we changed our reservation from Peninsula Grill to Tristan. It was one of the best meals we%26#39;ve ever had. Great service too! The waiter brought out lobster/corn bisque for everyone first. All we ordered were our entrees, but they kept bringing food (I guess because we were on the food tour in the am) For appetizers, pork bellies (which scared me, but they were good) and lamb ribs which fell off the bone! A mango sorbet for intermezzo. Then, my entree was duck breast with a cherry vanilla glaze that was delicious. My husband had diver scallops. For dessert a tasting dish, with everything on the menu! The waiter was also very helpful with the wine selection and brought out champagne for our anniversary. After dinner, we walked down Vendue St. We wanted to go to the Rooftop Bar, but the line was too long, so we headed back to Waterfront Park.
Day #4- Went to Poogan%26#39;s Porch for brunch. Although the food was good (banana pecan pancakes and sausage eggs benedict), the service was not very good. I don%26#39;t think it was just our waiter since other waiters seemed distracted as well. Next, we drove to Boone Hall. After a quick house tour, which was not as impressive as Drayton, we stayed for a ';play'; in front of the house. Very cheesy! Would not recommend this, unless you have tweens. We then toured the gardens and slave cabins and went to the Gullah show. That show was much better and informative.
After Boone, we stopped to buy some baskets on Rt. 17 and drove to Isle of Palms Beach. We stayed on the beach for a couple of hours and walked around. Nice beach and would love to take the kids back. Next time, I think we%26#39;d stay at Wild Dunes. Drove back to hotel via Shem Creek.
For dinner, we went to Sticky Finger%26#39;s. We had the fried onions for appetizers, which were very salty but good. I had the smoked chicken sandwich which was excellent and husband had pulled pork sandwich. Then, we went on the BullDog Ghost and Graveyard tour. This was more amusing than informative. I think you have to be in the right frame of mind for it (or had a few drinks beforehand). Our boys would have loved it! Next time, maybe we%26#39;ll do the Old City Jail tour. We actually liked the earlier tour so we could read the gravestones in the light.
Day #5- Went to BlueGreen Timeshare tour at Lodge Alley Inn. If you%26#39;re walking by Hyman%26#39;s, you%26#39;ll get accosted by these people. We wanted some free tour tix and restaurant vouchers and we%26#39;ve never had ';babysitting'; on our other trips to actually hear what this entails, so we decided why not. The guy was a hard-sell and VERY disappointed that we weren%26#39;t interested, but oh well! I think it would work for us in the long run, but BlueGreen just doesn%26#39;t have enough properties yet for us where we go. Anyway, after Bluegreen (which we got 2 Fort Sumter tix, and $50 in restaurant vouchers). we went to High Cotton for brunch. DELICIOUS! We had the lobster/shrimp crepe and white chocolate cream cheese stuffed french toast. sooo good!
After brunch, we headed to Folly Beach. This was a little junkier, but looked like fun for kids. It started to rain, so we just drove around a bit. The beach didn%26#39;t seem as white as Isle of Palms, but maybe that was the rain. We debated driving to Kiawah, but since we were tired, we decided to leave that for another trip. We drove back to the hotel for a nap and relaxing.
For dinner, we went to Jestine%26#39;s, which was great! They really do move people in and out fast. Our waiter wasn%26#39;t great, but you could tell the other waitstaff were good. We had okra gumbo to start. I had fried shrimp and okra for dinner, which was ok, but my husband had a fried chicken sandwich which was the best I%26#39;ve ever tasted. For dessert, he had the Coca Cola cake which he loved and I had a triple berry cobbler. It rivaled the fresh berry cobblers that I have every summer in Maine! We then went to a double feature movie in Mt. Pleasant.
Day #6- After checkout, we picked up some food at Harris Teeter and got the boat to Ft. Sumter. It was a fun ride. I think we should have done this earlier in the trip to get a geographical overview of Charleston. Also fun seeing dolphins on the side of the boat. I
%26#39;m not a big military history person, but it was interesting to see where the Civil War began and see the personal side of it. I wanted to rent Glory after this! I know the kids would love it!
After Fort Sumter, we went to 82 Queen for lunch. Great she crab soup and shrimp bisque. I had the spinach salad and BLT and husband had frogmore stew. Again, both great. I had the peach cobbler for dessert. Next, we did some shopping on King Street and finished up again at the Market. Then, we flew home. Although flight was canceled due to these rains up here in NE!
What a great trip! Can%26#39;t wait to go back and see the things we missed and spend more time at the things we already did! Thanks again to everyone for your help.
