Compass Cove in July

Is anyone staying at the Compass Cove during July with the 30% discount? I%26#39;m not sure that they took the discount off of my final payment and was just curious as to what the rates are with and without it.

Compass Cove in July

CeeAnne,

I just got my confirmation out

Room type OF Schooner Jr Suite

First Night rate $151.41

Stay value $1,647.47

Account Balance $166.55

Amount Due at check in $1,480.92

And I ask for the 30% off when I called so I assume they gave it to me.

How much did you pay for the 3 bedroom?

(I am sure it was around $400.00 a night)

Compass Cove in July

Discount, holy cripes! 1600.00 bucks! I got oceanfront with a kitchen in July for 89.00 a night! Seven nights for 623.00! $1600 is more than I gave for the downpayment for my new van! That%26#39;s a lot of money, hope it%26#39;s worth it. You can get a two bedroom, three double bed with a kitchen, oceanfront in south myrtle for 99.00 a night, and clean rooms from the posts I have read here on this forum. I can%26#39;t imagine spending that much on a place to sleep.

Yugie,

Where are you staying? That rate is for 9 nights July 4th week. The rate has increased since I booked. I just usually stay here and pay the price because we have stayed at Compass Cove since my kids were small and have such fond memories. (They are 18 %26amp; 21 and don%26#39;t care to vacation with parents anymore)

We leave tomorrow!!

JenLO, I guess they%26#39;re right. I thought that I had booke it at something just under $200 per night but I found some scribbled notes and it works out the same. Oh well, not a big deal.

Jen,

Sorry, it comes to $273 per night for the room plus tax.

I%26#39;m at the Carnival Motor Inn oceanfront at 2502 Ocean Blvd, for this trip July 9-16, and it was 89.00 a night, private balcony, oceanfront, pool, hot tub, kitchen, laundry on site, a lawn with umbellas, tables and chairs on the beach side. Never stayed at this particular hotel, but sounds good to me! The gazebo inn at 1607 South Ocean Blvd was 99.00 a night for same amenities, no lawn, but I have had good stays there, no complaints. There is a post in the forums from June 21st on the Southern Breeze and the Twilight Surf Motel and the review for comfort and cleanliness were very good. These are also 99.00 a night for the same dates July 9-16, and have 3 double beds with two seperate bedrooms, oceanfront with kitchen.

trip report- June 21-26, lots of restaurant/food tips

Just wanted to post a trip report since everything we did was based upon tips from here. Thanks to everyone- was one of the best trips we%26#39;ve ever gone on. Charleston is an amazing city, so full of history, architecture and best of all, a gastronomic paradise! I am a person who bases her vacations around food, so I can%26#39;t believe I waited this long to visit Charleston. We%26#39;re already planning our next trip. Anyway, this was a 10 year year anniversary trip (no kids), so many sites/visits were intended for adults, but we can%26#39;t wait to come back with our three boys!

Day #1- came in the afternoon and stopped at the Visitor Center for brochures, maps, coupons, etc. Then, we checked into Best Western King Charles Inn. This was the only bad part of our trip. We picked this for location and it was a great location, but we would not recommend or stay here again. See my review in the hotel section. The walls were VERY THIN and the customer service was horrible. Next time, we%26#39;ll do a nicer hotel or if we%26#39;re with the boys, the Holiday Inn. Next, we did the Old South Carriage Tour and got Zone #2! Our guide was fabulous. It gave us a good overview of the city and history. After the ride, we went to Blossom for dinner. We shared the buttermilk fried calamari which were so light and unique with the ginger sauce. I had the Caesar salad which was a little heavy with the dressing and my husband had the house salad which had Southern Comfort in the dressing which was not strong at all. I had the crab raviolis, which they%26#39;re known for since they%26#39;re homemade and my husband had the Palmetto bass. Both fantastic. No dessert since we were stuffed!

Day #2- we stopped back at the Visitor Center to buy the 2 day Heritage Passport which is a great deal if you%26#39;re doing a lot of sight-seeing in a short amount of time. We then went for breakfast at Hominy Grill. I had the regular Lowcountry breakfast and husband had a salsa omelet. We shared homemade banana bread, which was to die for! Then, we drove to Middleton Place. We went straight for the African American Focus Tour with Doug Nesbit which was the best tour of our trip. I have a degree in American Studies with a concentration in race and ethnic relations and Doug didn%26#39;t miss a thing! I would highly recommend this to everyone. Next, we walked around a bit in the unstructured gardens (be sure to bring water as it gets very hot) and then went on the garden tour. Not much was in bloom and since Doug was so amazing, this tour wasn%26#39;t as fabulous. The self-guided tour would have been fine. Next, we went to a late lunch at Middleton. The 3 course lunch is a great deal. The okra soup and she crab were good. The turkey and brie sandwich was refreshing after a hot day. The pulled pork was a little heavy. For dessert, the pecan pie seemed overcooked. And we found 2 hairs in the torte- yuck! But, we would still recommend this place after touring the Place. We finished with the Stableyards, which had individual guides who were very knowledgeable.

Next stop was Drayton Hall. It was very hot, so we quickly managed to get on the last tour of the day. It was interesting to see a ';preserved'; plantation as opposed to a ';restored'; home. After the tour, because of the heat, we only quickly walked around and headed back to the hotel. After a swim and drink, we walked around the Market area and went to Kaminsky%26#39;s. The brownie sundae was delicious and the Butterfinger cake was yummy.

Day #3- Started the day with Carolina FoodPro%26#39;s Chef Kitchen%26#39;s Tours. If you are into restaurants and foods, GO ON THIS TOUR! The usual tour guide was on vacation, so the owner, Amanda Manning gave the tour. She was great. We visited Tristan, Magnolia%26#39;s, Carolina%26#39;s and Oak. At each restaurant, we toured the outside and behind the scenes, seeing what goes into preparing the food. We also heard the history of each restaurant, each chef and each owner. It was interesting to see and hear the different opinions of each place. For example, Tristan is much more ';NY,'; with the latest gadgets, atmosphere, furniture, etc. and Carolina%26#39;s is much more of a local place, with the clientele resisting any change, and they have many old applicances, etc. We also sampled food at each location and it was AMAZING! After the tour, we went to Joseph%26#39;s for a quick bite- fried green tomatoes (nice and tart), the perfect grilled cheese (which was PERFECT), and a filet sandwich.

Then, we did our own walking tour, from our AAA guidebook and an architecture book I had purchased. We stopped at houses on the Heritage Passport- Nathaniel Russell and Edmonston-Allston and then walked around White Point Gardens and up the Battery stopping at Waterfront Park to sit on the swings with an italian ice. We then drove up to Aiken Rhett. It was interesting to tour these different houses and the history behind them.

After visiting these restaurants in the am, we changed our reservation from Peninsula Grill to Tristan. It was one of the best meals we%26#39;ve ever had. Great service too! The waiter brought out lobster/corn bisque for everyone first. All we ordered were our entrees, but they kept bringing food (I guess because we were on the food tour in the am) For appetizers, pork bellies (which scared me, but they were good) and lamb ribs which fell off the bone! A mango sorbet for intermezzo. Then, my entree was duck breast with a cherry vanilla glaze that was delicious. My husband had diver scallops. For dessert a tasting dish, with everything on the menu! The waiter was also very helpful with the wine selection and brought out champagne for our anniversary. After dinner, we walked down Vendue St. We wanted to go to the Rooftop Bar, but the line was too long, so we headed back to Waterfront Park.

Day #4- Went to Poogan%26#39;s Porch for brunch. Although the food was good (banana pecan pancakes and sausage eggs benedict), the service was not very good. I don%26#39;t think it was just our waiter since other waiters seemed distracted as well. Next, we drove to Boone Hall. After a quick house tour, which was not as impressive as Drayton, we stayed for a ';play'; in front of the house. Very cheesy! Would not recommend this, unless you have tweens. We then toured the gardens and slave cabins and went to the Gullah show. That show was much better and informative.

After Boone, we stopped to buy some baskets on Rt. 17 and drove to Isle of Palms Beach. We stayed on the beach for a couple of hours and walked around. Nice beach and would love to take the kids back. Next time, I think we%26#39;d stay at Wild Dunes. Drove back to hotel via Shem Creek.

For dinner, we went to Sticky Finger%26#39;s. We had the fried onions for appetizers, which were very salty but good. I had the smoked chicken sandwich which was excellent and husband had pulled pork sandwich. Then, we went on the BullDog Ghost and Graveyard tour. This was more amusing than informative. I think you have to be in the right frame of mind for it (or had a few drinks beforehand). Our boys would have loved it! Next time, maybe we%26#39;ll do the Old City Jail tour. We actually liked the earlier tour so we could read the gravestones in the light.

Day #5- Went to BlueGreen Timeshare tour at Lodge Alley Inn. If you%26#39;re walking by Hyman%26#39;s, you%26#39;ll get accosted by these people. We wanted some free tour tix and restaurant vouchers and we%26#39;ve never had ';babysitting'; on our other trips to actually hear what this entails, so we decided why not. The guy was a hard-sell and VERY disappointed that we weren%26#39;t interested, but oh well! I think it would work for us in the long run, but BlueGreen just doesn%26#39;t have enough properties yet for us where we go. Anyway, after Bluegreen (which we got 2 Fort Sumter tix, and $50 in restaurant vouchers). we went to High Cotton for brunch. DELICIOUS! We had the lobster/shrimp crepe and white chocolate cream cheese stuffed french toast. sooo good!

After brunch, we headed to Folly Beach. This was a little junkier, but looked like fun for kids. It started to rain, so we just drove around a bit. The beach didn%26#39;t seem as white as Isle of Palms, but maybe that was the rain. We debated driving to Kiawah, but since we were tired, we decided to leave that for another trip. We drove back to the hotel for a nap and relaxing.

For dinner, we went to Jestine%26#39;s, which was great! They really do move people in and out fast. Our waiter wasn%26#39;t great, but you could tell the other waitstaff were good. We had okra gumbo to start. I had fried shrimp and okra for dinner, which was ok, but my husband had a fried chicken sandwich which was the best I%26#39;ve ever tasted. For dessert, he had the Coca Cola cake which he loved and I had a triple berry cobbler. It rivaled the fresh berry cobblers that I have every summer in Maine! We then went to a double feature movie in Mt. Pleasant.

Day #6- After checkout, we picked up some food at Harris Teeter and got the boat to Ft. Sumter. It was a fun ride. I think we should have done this earlier in the trip to get a geographical overview of Charleston. Also fun seeing dolphins on the side of the boat. I

%26#39;m not a big military history person, but it was interesting to see where the Civil War began and see the personal side of it. I wanted to rent Glory after this! I know the kids would love it!

After Fort Sumter, we went to 82 Queen for lunch. Great she crab soup and shrimp bisque. I had the spinach salad and BLT and husband had frogmore stew. Again, both great. I had the peach cobbler for dessert. Next, we did some shopping on King Street and finished up again at the Market. Then, we flew home. Although flight was canceled due to these rains up here in NE!

What a great trip! Can%26#39;t wait to go back and see the things we missed and spend more time at the things we already did! Thanks again to everyone for your help.

trip report- June 21-26, lots of restaurant/food tips

Wow~ I loved reading this post review. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the Carolina Food Pros. Amanda just started doing the kitchen tour and we have not gotten any feedback until now. I will definately tell everyone that it is worth it. I am glad that you enjoyed your trip to Charleston.

trip report- June 21-26, lots of restaurant/food tips

Thanks for posting this TR; very informative. The Kitchen%26#39;s Tour sounds really interesting.

I%26#39;m glad you had a good time and your report only whets my appetite for my visit in spring of next year.

Wowee. Now THAT was some trip report! I%26#39;m worn out just reading it. Thanks so much for an awesome and informative review.

I want to run out and do some of the things y%26#39;all did!

What a trip report? How do you get tickets for the chef tour? Thanks

The Chefs Kitchen Tour starts at 9:30 am inside the Charleston Place Hotel. The tour last 2 hours and will take you to various restaruants. $40 per person. Call Carolina Food Pros (843) 723-3366. I went to their web-site to get this info. There is a lot of different tours depending on your ';food'; interest. www.carolinafoodpros.com

Bakery/Bagles and parking

Picking the forum%26#39;s brain again. I have 2 different questions...

1. We have decided to stay at the Holiday Inn (historic district) because of positive reviews but we are planning on bringing the suv. I think I read somewhere that the parking for the hotel is very tight .... even for a smaller car. Is this true? Does anyone know if it is a parking lot or a parking garage?

Oh... is the area around the Holiday Inn safe to walk from around downtown? We will have kids in tow but really prefer to walk.

2. Is there a good bakery or somewhere to get bagels from in the morning within walking distance of the Holiday Inn? Maybe offer cereal or other light breakfast items.

Thanks!

Bakery/Bagles and parking

1) I think the parking at the hotel is an elevated lot, so maybe there is parking underneath it too, but I have always parked on top and the spaces are tight and I drive a sedan.

2) Yes, it is ';safe'; to walk around the area of the Holiday Inn, but as of any city, you must be responsible for your own safety.

3) Yes, there are two places close by the Holiday Inn. First is Kennedy%26#39;s (Bakery). It is north from your hotel toward the water and docks. They have all kinds of bread, bagels, etc. The Bookstore Cafe is close too, but it can be very busy so be prepared to wait. It is actually caddy-corner (spelling?) from your hotel across the park. My husband suggest Saffron, which I have personally never been to, but he likes it. It is on East Bay.

If it rains, you are very close to a nice, somewhat new pubic library, which can have free entertainment for your kids especially if it rains.

Bakery/Bagles and parking

I don%26#39;t think that you are going to have a problem parking at the Holiday Inn.

Yes, you are going to be safe walking around the city from the hotel.

Around the Holiday Inn I agree with the previous post about Kennedys or Saffron. You can also walk down Meeting Street and there are a few cafes that have coffee and bagels/ muffins. You could try Cafe Cafe, Dianas or Josephs.

~ Some sad news is that Bookstore Cafe is no longer in business downtown. I heard that they moved to Mt. Pleasant somewhere but I haven%26#39;t heard anything else about it.

1. Thanks for the tips about the parking. I can basically park that thing anywhere but we might consider taking another car. We have only had 2 occasions when our car couldn鈥檛 fit into a parking garage.

We are all fairly ';streetwise'; for we do a lot of traveling here and overseas. But I know in Charleston, there are safer places than others. Nice to know these things ahead of time.

2. Just having an idea on where to go really takes a lot of stress out of the trip. Options are always good.

Actually I love libraries! If we do have poor weather we will keep it on our alternative list of things-to-do.

Thanks :)

Wow, I didn%26#39;t know about the Bookstore cafe closing. That is shocking. I must be out of the breakfast loop.

It was a shock for us as well. I can%26#39;t tell you how many locals and tourists we sent over there on a daily basis. They had one of the best breakfasts in the town!!

Thanks for the update on the loss of the Bookstore Cafe. That was on my agenda for breakfast when we visit in 2 months.

Disappointing.

Hi TG.

Add another vote for Saffron.

They always have wonderful food. Great Sunday brunch as well.

On our way....

Finally leaving for the beach should take about 4 hours....Cant wait to get into our room.

Be back in 10 days!!

On our way....

Jen,

Have loads of fun and take lots of pics! 1 week from today for us!!

Finding a nice place to stay - oceanfront

I%26#39;ve been reading hotel reviews and they are much more negative than positive. I%26#39;m trying to find a nice clean oceanfront hotel with a beach bar in North Myrtle Beach. Our kids are 15 and 18 and they don%26#39;t care about amusements and arcades. We would rather parasail or jet ski and they love to shop (wife and 2 daughters).

Finding a nice place to stay - oceanfront

I would try Kingston Plantation this is very close to the outlet mall.

Finding a nice place to stay - oceanfront

Fairfield SeaWatch

Kingston Plantation is located in the northern end of MB. We just returned from there and stayed at the Embassy Suites. There are several condo options, but I would recommend the Margate or Brighton Towers. There is a pool bar, several pools and beautiful grounds. www.kingstonplantation.com

By the way, some of the negative reviews under the Kingston Plantation Embassy Suites are really from people who appeared to have stayed at some of the condos on KP- there are many options and some of them are older. The Margate and Brighton towers are absolutely beautiful and pretty new. The Embassy Suites is updated and very nice %26amp; clean. Everyone checks in at the Embassy Suites even if staying at the various condos.

Might look at Avista in NMB. Few blocks above Main Street in Ocean Drive section. Fairly new building. Beach not terrible crowded. 100 yards to the north are houses and the beach is wide open.

Maybe two miles up the beach is parasailing. Maybe two miles inland from there to Little River and Inner Coastal Waterway marinas. Might find jet skis there. Have never seen them on the beach.

Motel next to Avista has a small Tiki bar. Really not more than an outdoor sandwich shop with beer. Two mile to the north in same building as parasail outfit is Harolds on the Beach. Ocean front deck with live music.

Couple miles to south is Molly Darcy%26#39;s on the Beach. An Irish pub with beach front deck.

If first class accomodatios aren%26#39;t that important you might check Blockade Runner in Cherry Grove. Right next to parasail outfit with inhouse bar. Never stayed there. Just guessing maybe a two star building. Not real sure if they%26#39;re condos or hotel rooms.

Places to stay in Myrtle Beach

We are considering a vacation in Myrtle Beach next year (summer %26#39;07). We are a family of 4, my husband, 2 kids ages 15 %26amp; 9 and myself. What places are affordable, nice accomodations? Never been to Myrtle Beach....what else would you recommend for entertainment, etc. The beach is our #1 thing we would like to spend our time. Thank you!!!

Places to stay in Myrtle Beach

Now is a great time to start planning for next year, and locking in some of those inexpensive accomodations, as they become a premium as your travel dates near....I would look at possibly a condo option or even a beach house...this would give you the option of ';eating in';, maybe picking up some local seafood and cooking it up at home....plus the extra space is nice...check out some of the condos on www.vrbo.com These are condos that are individually owned, and you can narrow it down to in what area of MB you would like to stay...another great website that I have used for booking friends and family is www.booerealty.com. They have 2 really cute beach houses that we have rented over the years, and really for the room in them and the convienence they were cheap!

Gosh, there is so much to do here....this site is a great search tool, so explore some of the other postings for all the options your family will have....Broadway at the Beach (www.broadwayatthebeach.com) Barefoot Landing (www.bflanding.com) Both of these places are great and both have weekly fireworks..Tuesday at Broadway and Monday atBarefoot...then you have shopping, NasCar Speedpark, Myrtle Waves water park...deep sea fishing, pirate cruises, dolphin adventures, banana boat rides, parasail.....the list is endless! But our beach is top notch! Wide, white sand with a bit of wave on the water, but not alot!

:)

Places to stay in Myrtle Beach

Lots of things to do.

Check out (www.broadwayatthebeach.com) Most of the things I will be doing are there. Nice area and near nice hotels.

Also Barefoot Landing (www.barefootlanding.com)

I like those selections because everything is sort of in one area and you won%26#39;t have to drive from here-to-there-to-here. I know our first time in Myrtle, I was completely lost. I couldn%26#39;t understand the North Myrtle Beach, North End of Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, etc. etc. etc. So for Broadway @ the Beach to have such a large number of activities it is great.

-Nicer hotels are all up and down the 60 mile stretch of Myrtle Beach.

-Affordable are probably more toward the northern end of Myrtle or southern end of Myrtle.

We are staying at the Brekers Paradise Towers (www.breakers.com) Nice clean beach and nice clean pool attractions.

Also with the ages of your kids, you and your husband would probably want a separate room from the kids. So try getting one of the 2-Bedroom suites. Breakers paradise has a nice one, Hampton Inn Oceanfront, Compass Cove (Mariner Building is better slow elevators in the Pinnacle building), Grande Shores Resort.

If you are staying more than 4-5 days. I would suggest renting a condo or house. It can get very expensive for a family of 4 to stay 7 days or more in a hotel unless they have special deals like if you stay 5 nights get a 6-7th night free only certain times of the year.

Check North Myrtle and Myrtle locations on vrbo.com. Rentals by owner with lots of pictures and prices.

We are MB junkies, and leaving Wed. to go. We stay every June at Kingston Plantation (North Myrtle Beach), you can stay in the hotel or rent a condo. Great place for kids, activities all the time for them with the Kids Club!

I%26#39;ve already booked a week for next June. I%26#39;m renting a condo from an owner in the Breakers Paradise Towers. We%26#39;ve never done this before. We%26#39;ve always stayed in a hotel and booked from the resort. I%26#39;m excited and somewhat nervous. I%26#39;m reading reviews left and right on here and on yahoo. Everything I%26#39;ve read about renting condos from an owner sounds favorable...the only reviews that bother me are about the litter and dirty pools (I%26#39;ve read a lot of those). I hope these people are wrong. It%26#39;s going to be a long year, just waiting for 2007, but I%26#39;m glad I got it booked early. If anyone has anything good or bad to say about the condos at Paradise Towers, I%26#39;d appreciate anything at all. If it%26#39;s bad, I can prepare. If it%26#39;s good, I can relax more. It%26#39;ll be a 3 bedroom/ 2 bathroom in the center on the 15th floor.

*bump* :-) It%26#39;s unit 1570...anyone ever stayed in it?

TIA :-)

  • blackheads
  • casual oceanfront dining

any recommendations of a casual, reasonably priced restaurant with ocean front dining(either indoor or patio)?

    casual oceanfront dining

    Try the Sea Captain%26#39;s House.

    casual oceanfront dining

In addition to the Sea Captains House, you have Bummz Beach Bar at 20th Ave N and Damon%26#39;s Ribs and More at 30th Ave S in MB....is you head just a bit south, into Garden City and Surfside you have Conch Cafe, and River City/Lattitude 22, and Nibils at the Pier....if you hit the Gulfstream Cafe before 6pm, some of their early bird specials are fantastic....and the sunsets cant be beat...views of both the Inlet and the Ocean from the top deck.

    Enjoy!

    :)

    Vasillis

Some posters have asked what the building is that was recently constructed on Lagoon Road near the Piggly Wiggly in Coligny Plaza.

It is Hilton Head%26#39;s newest Restaurant %26#39;Vasillis%26#39;. The owner is Nick who in the past has owned a number of restaurants on the island, including the Diner, Pasta Garden, Nicks Steak and Seafood, and Stacks.

He is devoting his full time to managing this new venue. We ate there last night. The food is great, and the menu is more like a high class steakhouse than a greek or mediterrian restaurant.

The prices match those of a steakhouse, so this is a special place and not something for a casual evening out.

At this time they do not have their liquor license, so they are offering setups and wine corkage without a charge. Our party of four brought two bottles from home, which they opened and served properly.

If you are staying in Shipyard or Forest Beach and want a special night, give this one a try.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    Vasillis

My husband and I eat there Wednesday night. The food is wonderful. One of the best we had on this visit. It was a bit funny buying beer from the local gas station and carrying it into a restaurant in a brown paper bag. We were told that they should have their liquor license by 7/4.

We also eat at the Jazz Corner. I now have a new favorite restaurant. The food was great and so was the music. Wonderful service too.

    oyster bar

I Know raw oysters aren%26#39;t good for you, but I love em. Where are the best oysters in Myrtle.

    oyster bar

Crabcatchers in Little River has the best raw oysters I have ever had (and I%26#39;ve had a lot).

    oyster bar

i agree with ncgator! The best oysters as well as just about anything else on the menu! I love the Fidh Fry there...yum! Tim and Tony (the owners) are some of the icest guys you will meet too!

    :)

another place with a great atmosphere is Dirty Dons(?) on 21st avenue north . we had a great time there , many pitchers of marguiritas !

Want a Place without a Lot of Kids

Please don%26#39;t take this the worng, way, I love Kids, but my husband and I are looking for a place in Myrtle Beach that might be a little secluded (maybe North, or south to Litchfield) where there won%26#39;t be a lof kids, does anyone know of a good place. Not too secluded, we would like a hotel with a Tiki Bar, etntertainment, that kind of thing

Want a Place without a Lot of Kids

You might try the Litchfield Inn...nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable...really nice beach area...you wouldnt be far from some excellent restaurants in that area, and you would have Georgetown just to the south of you for some interesting sight seeing.

If you prefer to be more in the MB area, you might look at the Mariott at Grande Dunes....not that there wont be kids there, but it is more out of the hub bub of the standard oceanfront resorts....

Both of these places have a pool/tiki style bar...not sure about the entertainment tho%26#39;....

    :)

Want a Place without a Lot of Kids

If you can wait till the end of August you%26#39;d have fewer children around. Otherwise, I was going to suggest the Marriott Grande Dunes as well. What a great place! It%26#39;s in a quieter area.

Which of these restaurants do u recommend?

Since restaurant.com is offering a 60% off sale, I can get $25 gift cards for $4 at various MB restaurants and thought it might be worth using while on vacation. Would you *really* recommend eating at any of these places (meaning...would you recommend them to a tourist normally?)

    -Anthony%26#39;s Pizza and Pan Pasta

-Bimini%26#39;s Oyster Bar and Seafood Cafe

    -Bodo%26#39;s German Restaurant and Pub

    -Causeway Restaurant

-Cedar Hill Landing and Oyster Roast

    -Crystalite Cafe

    -Dirty Don%26#39;s Oyster Bar

    -Firebelly Lounge (Wilmington)

    -Hoof N Finz

    -Jasmine Supper Club

    -La Piazza (Wilmington)

    -Lands End (Georgetown)

    -Nico%26#39;s

    -Shucker%26#39;s

    -The Mayor%26#39;s House (Pawley%26#39;s Island)

    -The Original Benjamin%26#39;s

    -The Parsons Table

    -Thorny%26#39;s Steakhouse

    -Thoroughbred%26#39;s Chophouse

    -Tuscany Bistro (Pawley%26#39;s Island)

Thanks so much for you honest opinions! We will also have a 5 year old with us.

Which of these restaurants do u recommend?

Definately Original Benjamins. Great food, and service. Crab legs still steaming hot when you get them.

Which of these restaurants do u recommend?

These 2 restaurants continue to get great reviews:

    The Parsons Table

    Thoroughbred%26#39;s Chophouse

You know, since Thoroughbreds has switched owners, I really think the quality of food and service has gone down --- maybe they will eventually get back on track, which I hope so, because it has always been one of my favs....

Agree with the Parsons Table....a few others from the list that I would frequent and recommend would be:

Bimini%26#39;s (great local hangout! Outdoor dining/usually has music)

Bodo%26#39;s (fun enviroment --- very international, near Pavilion)

    Jasmine%26#39;s (MB%26#39;s only Jazz venue!)

Thorny%26#39;s (great steak for the $$ and VERY kid friendly)

Have heard about Tuscany Bistro, but have yet to eat there.....I might have to check out that sale myself!

    :)

Anthonys Pizza is awful do your self a favor ... skip it. Throughbreds is pretty good. Some other restuarants to try...1) Desparados, 2 ) If you can splurge. NY Prime, the Best steak the world has to offer!!!! 3) Abluelos, its mexican

Just went to restaurant.com and did not see a sale. Did I miss it?

Looking for clean affordable beachfront hotel in NMB

I posted a similar message earlier. The Kingston Plantation, Embassy, and Hilton are booked. I am going with my wife and two daughters (15 and 18). Just need a one bedroom (kids can use the murphy bed) oceanfront/oceanview with pools and maybe a beach bar. If anyone knows of any places and possibly room #%26#39;s that would be much appreciated. I%26#39;m finding that alot of places aren%26#39;t hotels. They%26#39;re privately owned rooms which means you never know what kind of room you%26#39;re getting.

Looking for clean affordable beachfront hotel in NMB

Might shop around on this site. It%26#39;s Elliott Realty. They rent out privatly owned condo rentals. Well maintained and ';IF'; there is a problem, help is just a phone call away.

These are more to the north of the area you have been looking. Actually in the city of NMB. Areas north of Barefoot Lnading. Still just a short drive to attractions.

Have been hearing good reviews for the Avista. Just gave it a look and it has restaurant and lounge on site. Within walking distance or short drive to couple other beach bars and restuarants.

  • Looking for a no frills hotel

Last Oct. we spent a couple days in MB and stayed at the Best Western Grand Strand Inn oceanfront building and LOVED it! Its a wonderful hotel!! We are looking at going back in August, and there are no rooms available at the BW when we%26#39;re going. I am trying to find a similiar hotel, no big frills - we%26#39;re not into the pools/lazy rivers/playgrounds, etc. Its just going to be a girlfriend of mine and me, celebrating our 30th birthdays. We want to be oceanfront, but other than that we%26#39;re not picky. Any recommendations? TIA

Looking for a no frills hotel

    Try sandy beach resort www.beachtrips.com

Looking for a no frills hotel

Last year my boyfriend and I stayed at court capri. We had an oceanfront room with a full kitchen and a queen bed. We did not want maids in our room, we were not too concerned with service. we only wanted the oceanfront room with a kitchen. there are a lot of bad reviews about this hotel, but it was fine for us. nice location too! it was cheap and exactly what we wanted.

    Sands Dunes Resort

I just booked the 3 bedroom suite for this coming August . It is our first time in Myrtle Beach. I only thought of checking the reviews after I reserved. Should I worry? There seems to be really positive reviews and really negative reviews. We will be three couples of which two of us have a child who are 2 years old. Basically I want to know if it is clean and if there really are roaches in the rooms. PLease help! Let me know if it is better to cancel and start my search over again.

    Worried Mom

    Sands Dunes Resort

I think its horrible and I%26#39;m not really all that hard to please. The o/f suite we were assigned two years ago was filthy %26amp; it stunk. Can%26#39;t comment on the roach situation because we refused to spend one night in that place.

The kids pool area looks great and all the public areas were well kept.

I%26#39;ve heard they have renovated recently %26amp; things have improved but I%26#39;ll never try it again.

Don%26#39;t know if this helps or not.

    Sands Dunes Resort

We stayed there last year and asked to be moved to a different room right away. The first room they attempted to book us in was unacceptable. It was dark, dingy and smelled. We asked to see another room to make a decision or else we were not going to stay there. The next room they showed us was an improvement, but still not up to my standards of cleanliness. Definitely was worn and torn. It was late and we didn%26#39;t want to drive around to find another place so we chose to stay. The pool area was a lot of fun, but rather small. Bar right next door to pool, music, karoke, contests throughout the day. Their location is in a decent area. If you have small kids, the waterpark there is great. Remember, you can always change your mind and refuse to pay once you see your room. You may want to check their cancellation policy to see if you will lose a percentage of your deposit. Since this is your first time to Myrtle Beach, I would choose a better place to stay so it will be positive experience.

PS - the hotel is set up like a motel with the entrances on the outside walkway not an interior hallway. When we arrived it was about 9:00 pm and the walkways were full of trash sitting outside everybody%26#39;s door. Many flies were present.

    Worried Mom,

We stayed there last year with our 1-4 year old and we had a wonderful time. I can honestly tell you that it is not the best resort at Myrtle Beach, but the waterpark puts smiles on the children and that makes up for the other in my opionion. I do remember not getting towels as we would have liked and their was a lot of renovations taking place.

Here is the exciting part for YOU!!! We are actually going back next week- we will be there from Sunday to Thursday- kids now 2-5. If you send me your e-mail, I will give you an update as soon as I get back. My work e-mail is: epearce@firstcommunitysc.com. Send me a note so I can respond back to you when we return. If I do not hear back I will try to put an update onto Trip Advisor. Have a great day,

    Happy Father

Unless you really want the kids water park I would try South Wind,Grande Shores,Forest Dunes or Sea Island. All are in the area.

Will let you know how it is when we get back, going next week. Were atSand Dunes 2 yrs ago and we are going back. Had no problems at all. Have stayed in an ocenafront effieciency, the rooms were a bit outdated but I heard they have renovated them and basically we did not spend much time in the room. Love this beach area and area of Myrtle Beach. Did not like firther south area of Myrtle beach much too congested.

Just returned last night after staying at the Sand Dunes. Had a great week. As we were returning customers we are now gold card members. This is free and gets you a few discounts. We stayed in an oceanfront room and it was great. The 8th floor, clean and I think updated from our stay ther 2 years ago. We have previously stayed in an oceanfront efficiency and the only difference is a sink and stove top. The regular room and a refrig, microwave and coffee pot.

We were able to check in at 11am which was very nice.

We did not use the pools at all,we are basically there for the beach.

Did not use the water park as we did not have children with us and it is very kiddie oriented.

Nice having a river city there to eat at,can order take out and eat at the beach or sit outside there and overlook the water park. also nice having a california pizza right there also.

Music by the pool,I believe everyday{a DJ}, except there was no music on mon and tues. they play music 12-4pm. you can hear it at the beach depending on where you sit,but it is not overwhelming.

any questions I will be glad to answer.

I really like this beach area and the view is wonderful.

I am home tonight and wishing I could look out my window at the ocean.

    J-

Can you give more details of the Sands? Is the pool bar entertainment at Sands or Ocean Dunes? How close are the 2? Is the water park area big enough to make some older kids happy ( 11, 12 , 13) ? Where would be the best place to request? I heard rooms were renovated. Id like a newer one. Was the maid service good? Also,is there washer and dryer? We stayed at Embassy last year and it had everything EXCEPT a washer and dryer.. none in the entire hotel. Id like to try the Sand Dunes, but all of the negatice posts last year kept me from booking. This year, there are many GOOD reviews. Do you have any pictures of the hotel and grounds?? Thanks in advance.

The pool entertainment was at the Sand Dunes Tues thru Saturday. It was a DJ,he played music and did some games in the pool etc.

I did hear possibly the same DJ at the Ocean Dunes from a distance on Monday.

The 2 motels are side by side. Sand Dunes is larger.

Walked over once before to the Ocean Dunes and felt like the motel rooms were looking straight down at the pool area,didn%26#39;t like the looks of it.

As far as the water park, in previous years my teenagers had used the lazy river but it is really full of l;ots of little kids now. It is not a big water park as you may think,a few water slides maybe 6 feet high and an area where there is water squirting out at you. The lazy river is fairly small.

Not sure what size room you want as how many people are being with you.

No washer and dryer in our room. you may be more interested in the2,3 bedroom areas.

We had a hotel size room which had 2 double beds, the bathroom and a separate area outside the bathroom with an extra sink and mirror. If you go to the sand dunes website, you can see the room dimensions and a scale of the room layout. I like the oceanFRONT rooms myself.

The maid service was ok,they did the basics.

    Thanks J.

There are 14 of us for sure. Possibly 18. I want to share a 3 bedroom suite. Then you get the washer/dryer. But those suites are only ocean view. Or thats all thats left now. I love Ocean FRONT too!!!

Embassy has the water park too. Its in a shallow pool, where it looks like the one at the sands is not in water. Still, it gives the kids something different to do. It looks like there is a lazy river at the water park that looks pretty big. Good enough. Im a beach person. I just want to sit on the beach until 5! :)

I heard so much about the place being filthy and the rooms being disgusting. Im glad it seems to be much better there. I really want to give this place a try! if YOU HAVe any pictures you can share, Id love to see them. Thanks so much.

Construction update at Marriott Ocean Watch

Anyone stayed at Marriott%26#39;s Ocean Watch? Heading down in a couple of weeks and was wondering about status of the construction going on there.

Construction update at Marriott Ocean Watch

Not for sure what the completion date is of that project (and I am sure there will be additional projects after that) is expected....but there is still construction there, mostly finishing up the outside of the building (stucco work, etc...)

  • Have you stayed at the Patricia Grand before?

I am reading mostly bad reviews about this hotel. My boyfriend and I were considering staying there in August.

Have you stayed at the Patricia Grand before?

The Patricia Grande has been going thru some renovations...paint, some newer furnishings, curtains, bedspreads...etc...but some of the building still shows signs of an aging beachfront hotel --- a number of places along the Strand really get well used thru the summer season. If you arent expecting anything fancy, or ultramodern, I think you will enjoy yourselves here...one nice thing is that you are centrally located, not a far trip to the downtown area or to the 21st Ave N area (restaurants, beach bars, coffee shops, ice cream, etc)..and they do have a nice beach area there....

    Hilton Head for Labor Day?

I was thinking of going to HHI for a long weekend over Labor Day-what are the crowds like on the beaches and what recommendations does everyone have as far as accomodations? I checked Hotwire and they had a couple of resorts- one that 3.5 stars and the other was a 4star for pretty good prices, anyone know which resorts these could be? Also, (sorry for so many questions) my sons wants to go deep sea fishing, any recommendations for that as well would be greatly appreciated!!

    Hilton Head for Labor Day?

From what I understand Hotwire has contracts with Hilton and Intercontinental.

My guess is 3.5 Star is Holiday Inn Oceanfront and 4 Star either the Crowne Plaza or the Hilton Oceanfront Resort.

    Skip Hyman's

My family reunion was in Charleston over Father%26#39;s Day 2006. Our group of about 20 people had dinner at Hyman%26#39;s and it wasn%26#39;t very good. Someone with the nametag ';Eli Hyman'; came to our tables and recommended a few dishes including mussels which I love. I ordered them but they were bad. My cousin and nephew also ordered them and theirs were bad as well. They tasted like they were old or something. They were scampi style but that didn%26#39;t improve the flavor. My brother got the whole fried grouper and he liked that but pretty much all of us were disappointed.

The other thing that I didn%26#39;t like were the hush puppies. They were very sweet, similar to Boston Market%26#39;s cornbread only in a hush puppy. My brother-in-law went to college in Charleston and he said they are made to be sweet in the Charleston area but I really didn%26#39;t like them.

Their prices are very good and you get quite a bit of food but if the food isn%26#39;t good, it%26#39;s a waste.

    Skip Hyman's

Before you go bashing a business on a public forum, perhaps you should notify the management. It%26#39;s altogether possible that they got a bad batch - it is seafood, you know. If indeed your food was %26#39;bad%26#39;, I%26#39;m sure you would have been comp%26#39;d with all of the appropriate ';sorry%26#39;s';.

I%26#39;m not a Hyman%26#39;s apologist, heck, I%26#39;ve only been there once, but to me one bad meal does not a restaurant make.

The restaurant business is too keen in Charleston for even a place like Hyman%26#39;s to take it for granted.

Longbay or beach colony or carolina winds or compass cove?

Hi, I%26#39;ve been looking and looking fo the perfect vacation spot, and still can%26#39;t make up my mind, so I came across these hotels, and I need some feed back, I%26#39;ll tell you what am looking for. Atmosphere form example music maybe an outdoor grill, nice pools and clean rooms, and a good restaurant. Any suggestions? thanks in advance

Longbay or beach colony or carolina winds or compass cove?

next door to Carolina Winds is a place maybe better than all them , Grande Shores . it has now become the only place we will stay along the GRAND STRAND . fyi , Compass Cove is at the south end of Myrtle Beach , the other 3 are along the ';Golden Mile'; , a favorite area among many of the posters on this forum .bst of luck where ever you , they%26#39;re all great resorts .

Longbay or beach colony or carolina winds or compass cove?

I%26#39;ve stayed at Carolina WInds. They do not have live music, but the Sands hotel is two doors down and we walk there a couple of nights to hear the music. No outdoor grills here. Pool is pretty nice, chairs at pool can be hard to find early in the morning. Resturant was very good. Great location for this hotel. Quieter end of the beach, nice residential neighborhood - good for jogging or walking.

We had a very nice 3 bedroom condo.

    If you go to www.carolinacondo.com

you can see the room that we stayed in and other pictures of the

    hotel.

Good luck - I know it IS a very hard decision..

eb556 monitor the post Just arrived at Compass cove and are not happy.....seems like unless jenlo%26#39;s situation changes, you can rule out Compass Cove for your stay.

    Eb556,

We love the all the pools here but stay in the Mariner building only

    and you will love it.

last minute change in plans!!! Need some advice!!

Originally me and my fiance had planned to stop in Charleston for a day on our way down to Florida, but after reading all the wonderful things on here, we have decided to skip Florida altogether and spend 5 days in Charleston =)

We%26#39;re leaving in 2 weeks and while this site has already given me sooo much advice on places to eat, things to do, etc but I still have a couple questions..

We are staying in North Charleston near the airport because of the discount I get from work. How far of a drive is it to downtown Charleston (we are taking his motorcycle so we don%26#39;t mind long drives, I am just wondering) Also, where are some good spots to park that are kind of in the middle of everything so that we won%26#39;t have to drive much once we get there?

Also, we wanted to spend a day at the beach..from what I%26#39;ve read Kiawah looks like a nice place to go but I%26#39;m still trying to figure out which one would not be too far of a drive from north Charleston.

We plan to take a carriage tour one morning, then maybe do some shopping for anything we can carry back on a motorcycle!! We also want to tour Drayton Hall and take a walk on the battery... and of course go to all the recommended restaurants. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice/tips for what else to do while we%26#39;re there?? My fiance wants to ride horses but I could not find any info on it..is there anywhere to do that in the Charleston area? I know we are doing all the touristy stuff, but are there any other things we should do/see to get a feel as to what it would be like to live here? (we are also kind of house hunting right now...) I know this is a lot to ask but thank you so much in advance for any help:) I just want to make the best out of this trip!!

last minute change in plans!!! Need some advice!!

Kiawah is about 25 miles from the airport - some commericalize, divided highway, then a two-lane country road. The two lane road (Main Road, which becomes Bochicket Road) is curvy in parts and boardered by huge live oak trees. There is a fair amount of fast-moving local traffic that makes surprise stops for hidden turns and driveways. This road was built for slow moving farm traffic and some limited beach traffic. It is beautiful, with lots of special lowcountry vistas along the way, but it dangerous. Since you are accustomed to traveling by motorcycle, you know the risks.

Once you get to Beachwalker park on Kiawah, you will find a gorgeous beach, with nice restrooms and changing areas, and a snack bar. It will cost about $5 to park your bike for the day. Alond the way to or from the beach, stop at The Angel Oak, on Johns island, just east of the intersection at Maybank Highway. The Oak is about 1500 years old an dis truly amazing. Visiting the Oak is free.

On Johns Island there are quite a few horse farms. You will see some of the most beautiful along The Bohicket Road. I know there are also places on Johns Island that give riding lessons. I am not sure where you could do trail riding. The resort at Seabrook Island, adjacent to Kiawah has an equestrian center, with riding on trails and on the beach. Call them to find out if persons other than resort guests can use the facility.

last minute change in plans!!! Need some advice!!

Driving from your hotel to Downtown should not take long. Depending on where you are staying your drive will be anywhere between 15-30 min. For parking downtown, anywhere you go will be convient to walking around the town. The problem will be if they allow the bikes in the lots. I know the lot at the visitors center does not allow bikes because they don%26#39;t have enough weight or something to trigger the hand.

I agree with KiawahVilla that Kiawah is a great beach to visit. You will enjoy the beautiful drive out there on the bikes.

The carriage rides all leave from the city market. They start at 9am and run until 5pm. That will take you about 1 hour. You will want to spend some time walking around the market. There is lots of shops, restaurants and pubs in that area. I do recommend you walking around the battery and the waterfront. The houses are beautiful and historic. The gardens would be nice to stop into to enjoy a little shade. It is HOT here.

I might be wrong but I thought that Middleton Place would let you ride horses. Maybe someone else know more than I do?

    Enjoy your stay!

Middleton Place does offer riding lessons and trail rides. I would never have thought to look there! It works out great because it%26#39;s one of the places we want to visit while we%26#39;re there! Riding on the beach sounds like it will be really nice too, I%26#39;m going to look into that also.... My fiance is gonna be so happy!

I am a little worried about the parking situation now, but it%26#39;s good to know. Do you usually see a lot of bikes in Charleston? I hope it isn%26#39;t TOO hard to find parking.. : /

Anyway thanks so much for your help!!!! : )

The Isle of Palms would be about 20 - 30 min from the airport, depending on traffic. During non-rush hour about 20 min. The beach there is wide and beautiful. There is a bar right on the beach called the Windjammer. Alot of ';bike people'; go there, you always see alot of bikes parked out front. There is also a large public parking lot a little further down the street. To get there you would get on 526 and just follow the signs to Isle of Palms. There are also public restrooms and showers at the Isle of Palms, so you can rinse off and not have a sandy drive back!

There are several parking garages downtown, I am not positive of their views on motorcycles, but I would imagine that they allow them.

We see tons of bikes in Charleston!! If you can%26#39;t find a garage that allows parking ( I am sure that there are some) then you can park at a meter or there is usually free street parking around the battery if you get there earlier in the day. Yall will be fine, Don%26#39;t worry.

I am much more informed now and i think we%26#39;ll have a great time in Charleston..you were all so helpful! Thank you so much!!!! :D

Wow, all the way from Michigan on a bike. Remember that suntan lotion on any exposed skin. Also remember that if you really love something you want to buy just be sure it fits in a reasonable box and mail it home.

Hi Ana820! I know you are going to LOVE your trip to Charleston! I agree with previous posts that there are loads of bike folks that visit Charleston. I work downtown and think the Market area would be a great central location to park and walk around. You can find lots of souvenirs in the outdoor market and the shops and have a great lunch. Plus you are right where you need to be for that carriage ride!

While I love the idea of the drive out to Kiawah, I really think you might be happier with the beach at IOP. The Windjammer is just so cool and there are always bikes out front. Check their concert schedule. Not a shabby drive there either. Great views.

Not sure of the schedules, but I really like the comedy show, ';The Have Nots!'; It is one of those improv groups. It is just off the market. Also you may want to check to see if there is anything going on at the Dock Street Theater. I love French Quarter Art Walks they have downtown in Spring and Fall. All the galleries have little receptions.

I%26#39;ve never done the Sunset cruises with Dolphin watches, but we have our own boat and love doing that. The dolphins are so cool to watch swimming along, especially if they have their little ones with them. What a great way to wind down a busy day!

Hope you have a fantastic trip!

  • Pecan Pancakes/waffles - & restaurant comments

Base on all the great information on this site I think I have a lineup for restaurants.

    A few questions:

Sunday brunch(lunch time) - market pavillion or charleston place. - Does anyone have an idea which might be better.

Monday - would like a good breakfast with some pecan pancakes or waffles - ideas? (High Cotton - had some but they were banana which I am allergic to)

For seeing how it would fit in:

    Friday Night:

Getting in late - stop an Peninsula Grill bar for appetizers/desert (do you know how late they are open)

    Saturday:

Breakfast pick up something - Kennedy%26#39;s or Saffron

    Lunch Tristans

    Dinner Charleston Grill

    Sunday

Pick up something (if I am still hungary)

    Brunch?

    Dinner Hanks

    Monday

Breakfast - Somewhere with pecan pancakes?

    Lunch Magnolias

One other question not related to food: How long should I allow at Middleton Plantation. I am driving back to Atlanta Monday.

    Pecan Pancakes/waffles - %26amp; restaurant comments

A vote for Charleston Place for brunch!!! It is excellent! Not quite sure where you could get pecan pancakes/waffles. Sorry. Allow at least 4 hours for Middleton Place. Bring a bottle of water along. It is beautiful.

    Thanks,

I also saw the renaissance (Wentworth Grill) has a seafood bunch. Any opinions on this one? - I did some searchs but no comments.

If I can%26#39;t find the pecan pancakes - I will have to try the sweet potato ones at josephs.

plantation oaks on ashley river road

Ive decided on this apartment and sent them application and deposit. Im a little worried as Im still in nj and have only seen pictures of this place. has anyone ever stayed here or know about this apartment complex? Id appreciate any opinions. thanks in advance

    Brian-nj

plantation oaks on ashley river road

The area is very conventient to everything you will need, and it is an easy drive into Charleston. In general, the newer apartments in suburban Charleston are very nice and have many more amenities than comparable complexes in New Jersey.

plantation oaks on ashley river road

    dont all answer at once,,,lol

I lived in Plantation Oaks when they were first built in the mid-1980s. Obviously, I cannot comment on what they are like now. Back then, I was impressed with the layout. We had a one-bedroom with a screened porch overlooking the swimming pool. The pool was great and the place was surrounded by grand old Oak Trees that added to the ambience of the complex. It was a gated community that required a clicker or code to get in. I found this to give a false sense of security that was really not necessary and in a couple of cases I think it attracted problems.

Back in those old days we had a problem with huge snakes. I%26#39;m talking 10 foot long and as big around as your head. There were two of them found in the grand oaks. And we were wondering what happened to those dogs . . . (not ours, thank goodness!) Anyway, the whole area is much more populated now and I%26#39;m sure that the remnants of wild life are much more far and in between than back then.

You are close to lots of things. St. Francis Hospital. O%26#39;Charlie%26#39;s Restaurant. Chick-Fil-A. Banks. Food Lion. I-526. Not too much farther away is a new Super Wal-Mart. The other direction is Citadel Mall, with Sears, Belk, Dillard%26#39;s %26amp; Target.

The traffic on Highway 61 is a bear! Of course, it may be mild compared to what you are used to. You can also take Glenn McConnell Boulevard to avoid some of that traffic and just cut back in to Hwy 61 near the complex.

    Hope this info helps!

thanks fir. that was helpful. I have heard there%26#39;s a lot of banana spiders around the complex but I can deal with them over the snakes,,lol.

do you happen to know if there%26#39;s any bars or nightclubs very closeby? I am single and enjoy the nightlife. if you know of this Id appreciate any comments. thanks again

Okay Beezer, let me think . . . depends of course in what you are looking for . . . there are many choices I have not listed. I have included estimated drive times, not during traffic hour.

Penachio%26#39;s is an Italian Restaurant close to you, but the whole left size is a nice lounge, dark with a bar, booths and I think a sofa. They have their following of regulars and I think on weekends have live jazz music. You can also grab a nice dinner at the bar, Italian favorites, steak, seafood, etc. (2 minutes)

Back Nine is in a stip shop right up from you next to a Subway and a florist. Bar with kareoke some nights. I think pool table, but can%26#39;t remember. (2 minutes)

The Wolftrack Inn is a neighborhood favorite not terribly far from you going away from town, maybe 5 minutes down Hwy 61 between Hardees and Piggly Wiggly grocery store. The Wolftrack is a bar, not a restaurant, but it does serve some food and I think a good lunch special. Live bands on the weekends. A group of faithful regulars. (5 minutes)

Tracy%26#39;s is supposed to move in across the street in the strip shops across from the Piggly Wiggly. Not sure when it will open, but it is a sports bar. They have another location about 7 minutes from you on Sam Rittenberg across from Ashley Lanes Bowling alley. They have live music some nights and kareoke on Wednesdays. Lots of pool tables, shuffle board, foosball, Golden Tee, etc. (5 minutes to the new one, 7 minutes to the one across from the Bowling Alley.)

Some folks like the bar in the Bull %26amp; Finch restaurant inside of Citadel Mall. Depends on what you like . . . (5 minutes)

%26#39;R%26#39; Pub is up near the corner of Hwy 61 and Hwy 7 (Sam Rittenburg) and likely you will have to ride right by it on your way home. Regular bar. I think pool tables and darts. (5 minutes)

Manny%26#39;s is a little farther from you up on Hwy 7 going towards the Northbridge. If you are coming from North Charleston or by I-26, you would have to pass it. It is a Greek/American restaurant, but has a good bar scene with trivia on Thursdays and live music some nights. (10 minutes)

Cisco%26#39;s is in the same area and is a Mexican place, but don%26#39;t let that fool you. They have a pretty good happy hour crowd, live music some nights, radio station broadcasts and kareoke on Fridays. (10 minutes)

    Hope this helps!

it did help. thank you very much

Need Advice on Forest Dunes Resort Condo 1803

Has anyone stayed there? We%26#39;re thinking of staying there in October and want some reviews beforehand on there. I%26#39;ve heard people say on here to get an A Rated condo, how do I get the rating on a condo? This is our first family vacation and I want it to be a good experience. I have also heard that North myrtle Beach is somewhat cleaner than the south end. I%26#39;m mainly wanting confirmation that this particular condo is a nice condo to stay at so we don%26#39;t regret staying there. Anyone stay at the 1803 condo? Also, how are the elevators at that hotel? And the pools? Any advice would help me in making my final decision. Thanks!

Also, how are the beds? I read in some reviews that they were hard as rocks. We%26#39;re staying 4 days, we want soft beds.

Need Advice on Forest Dunes Resort Condo 1803

Also, what are the odds of having a hurricaine in October??? lol That%26#39;s one of the reasons we wanted to go in October, less of a chance of hurricaines and less crowded, yet the temps are still around 70. Are there ever hurricaines in October at Myrtle Beach? Anyone know???

    Hi,

Are you traveling from London to MB for vacation??? Well the weather is still good in October. What part of the month? And yes, there is still a chance of a hurricane in October.

We stayed at the Forest Dunes 2 years ago and it was TERRIBLE! I don%26#39;t remember the condo number but it needed repairs and the bed was hard. The pools were small and no kiddie pool on the inside (I have a small child). They only had 1 outdoor pool and 1 indoor pool. The elevators broke on our last day and we had to bring out things down 12 flights of stairs!!!!

I, personally, would never go back there. We go to MB each October ourselves and I am researching right now. We stayed at Monterey Bay last year and we liked it but they are renovating right now and I have heard some bad things about it right now. I am considered The Long Bay Resort.

Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy your vacation.

    dik's last resort

hey! i was just wondering if anyone can tell me about dik%26#39;s last resort. i%26#39;ve heard good thing and bad thing%26#39;s about it. what kind of stuff do they say to u?

    dik's last resort

We love D%26#39;s Last Resort. (Sorry, the website won%26#39;t let me type the actual name of the place) The food isn%26#39;t really great, but the atmosphere is a lot of fun. The first time we visited, it was just me and my wife. The next time, we took our kids (ages 6 and 12) to lunch. Things are a little more tame during lunch.

Our kids loved the place. They didn%26#39;t understand some of the adult humor, but what they did understand, they thought was hilarious.

Yes, the servers and staff truly do insult you on-purpose. You can either get involved and play along (which will encourage them more), or you can be quiet and they are only moderately insulting. I would say that it can be as much fun as you make it.

They make ';condom'; hats for everyone (including the kids), and put an insulting comment on them. Each server can interact with the guests any way they want. For our adult-only first trip, our server sat down at our table with us when we arrived. We didn%26#39;t know it was our server, and we didn%26#39;t know why this stranger sat at our table. We waited for a long time, and when I finally complained to my wife about there being no waitress, she finally got up, made a sarcastic comment to me, and reluctantly took our drink order. Believe me, it was funnier than it sounds.

Give D%26#39;s a try, and make sure to ask your server where the bathroom is located. As I said, the food isn%26#39;t really very good, but it is a lot of fun, and well worth the time and money.

    dik's last resort

Let me see if I have this right...

The food is not very good, and the wait staff hurls insults at you, but it%26#39;s lots of fun? Hmm...

I can%26#39;t help but think of the patrons who don%26#39;t know the insults are part of ';the act.'; Even knowing that going in, some people just don%26#39;t warm up to insults. I used to work in a nightclub where Jackie Mason performed. He always picked on the ringside seats. Most ';victims'; laughed, but some got up %26amp; walked out. You have to be able to laugh at yourself %26amp; some people are too sensitive.

PS: I just found a D%26#39;s Last Resort T-shirt at a local thrift shop...like their ads, they%26#39;re pretty funny.

Been there twice for lunch. Dinner it%26#39;s pretty crowded. Have seen line halfway across parking lot in the evening.

Tables are long. Seat maybe twenty or more to a table. They just start filling the table up. Party of five. Party of four.....Party of six......until table is full. Not only do you laugh at yourself but you get to laugh at perfect strangers. Well.....They%26#39;re laughing at you too so it works out......

Table cloth is one long sheet of paper. Server shows up and rips corner of paper off and writes your order on it. Straws and utinsels are just thrown on the table. Every man for himself.

When the meal shows up they go out of their way to place wrong meal in front of wrong person. Somebody in the second party down the table might get your order.

Haven%26#39;t been to the one in MB but have taken the kids (11 %26amp; 14) to the one in Boston (during lunch) and they love it!!! We are looking forward to going to the one in MB when we get there.......in 11 days (and counting)!

It%26#39;s a great place to go...your kids will love it ! Just be careful if you have anyone who is easily shocked because they won%26#39;t censor anything for grandmas. :)

It%26#39;s a fun gimmick but now we only go if traveling with someone who has never been there. It a ';been there, done that'; sort of place.

    The food is decent.

what does bump for ???? mean?

I received this message from one of the people in my feedback for hotels. what does it mean?

what does bump for ???? mean?

bump means to ';bring it back to the top'; just in case it got lost in the shuffle of posts. actually bumping it up. apparently beachlady is interested in your topic and wants others to see and/or respond to it..

what does bump for ???? mean?

eb556, I was moving up a post about a hotel you had mentioned. Someone else had also mentioned this hotel in an earlier post and I was moving the post up to the top of the forum so hopefully you would notice it..

Anytime you add to a post, that post then moves to the top of the forum. I just put the word ';bump'; to.. ...well.....bump it to the top for you to see it.

Kind of confusing to explain. Hope you understand.

Also....I may have actually ';bumped'; one of your original threads by mistake. Oh well.

See... I am bumping this message... or ';thread'; up..

I have nothing to add.. other than.. bump... so others can see it .. it moves right to the top...

    see...

I could have added.. just .... ( but we say ';bump';)

    :)

Thanks for explaining BUMP, I get it now!
